Chapter 2 (الباب الثاني) by KUWAISIANA

While there is a spectrum of alternative Arabic music being made today across the Middle East, Kuwaisiana’s sound explores new territory for the Khaleeji dialect (the culture associated with the Arabian Peninsula), which is typically more closed off and protective of its symbols. ⚡ The result is a unique twist to what “Alternative Arab Rock” or a “New Orleans band” can sound like and a highly imaginative journey for listeners.

Born out of +Aziz’s desire to explore parallels between American and Khaleeji cultures, Chapter 2 (الباب الثاني) is Kuwaisiana's followup EP to Chapter 1, which was released through Universal Music MENA in 2018.

This 22-minute EP deepens the band’s exploration of the day-to-day experiences of Arab-American youth and the evolving viewpoints of those living in the Arabian Peninsula.

فرقة كويزيانا تجسد خليطًا ثقافيًا جديدًا، وهو خليط يوضّح تأثير ثقافة العَوَلمَة المتغيّرة على شباب اليوم وصقلها لهويّتهم. كويزيانا هي فرقة تقدّم صنفًا مستقلّاً من الروك المُتأثِّر بالموسيقى العالمية. لذا بإمكاننا - على ذلك - تسميته بـ(الروك الخليجي) أو (الروك العالمي). تمخّض اسم الفرقة (كويزيانا) كمحصّلة عدة محادثات مبدئيّة مع كتّاب وفنانين ومفكرين محليين.

"تركّزت تلك المحادثات حول تسليط الضوء على نقاط التشابه بين الثقافتين الخليجية (الكويتية) والأمريكية. مثلاً، تتميّز كلتا الثقافتين بالتنوع لنشوئهما في مدينتيّ موانئ، وكذلك تشترك الثقافتان باعتمادهما على النفط، و تشابه المناخ العام، بالإضافة إلى العوامل المشتركة ما بين موسيقى الغوص الكويتية وموسيقى الفرقة الكبيرة (البيغ باند) في لويزيانا".

قد لا نجد جميع تلك العناصر في موسيقى كويزيانا, إلّا أن هذا هو ما حفّز المشروع في البداية. أصدقاؤنا في Universal Music MENA يصنّفون خطّنا الفنّي كـ”موسيقى عربية مستقلة“.

"بدأت الفِرقَة من رغبة لمزج الإرث الموسيقي للويزيانا مع هويتي الخليجية. فهو مشروع لتقابل المشرق مع المغرب، دبّت فيه الحياة تلقائيّا و سرعان ما صاغ هويته الخاصة. سعدت جدًا بالنتائج وبدأت بتكريس كميات كبيرة من الوقت لتشكيل الفرقة."

"بشكل عام، لا أظن أن موسيقانا تعبّر فقط عن الثقافة الخليجية، بل تمتد كذلك إلى الثقافة العربية الأمريكية. لا أجزم أنّني سفيرًا لأي من المجتمعين، و لكنّني أشعر بالارتباط بهاتين الهويتين وأتراوح بينهما، و موسيقانا على ذلك ترمي إلى التوفيق بينهما على أكثر من منحى. تمتلك فرقة كويزيانا تلك الروح التي يتقابل فيها المشرق مع المغرب، انطلاقًا من إرادتي لاستكشاف موسيقى الروك".

في حلّتها الحالية و كفرقة روك مستقل (إندي روك)، تبلغ كويزيانا من العمر ما يقارب أربعة أعوام. و بخصوص أفراد الفرقة، يقول +عزيز: "أول من قابلت هو عازف الطبول الفرنسي ماثيو، والذي يُعد ذاكرة المجموعة وعمودها الفقري. أتدرب معه في المقام الأوّل وهو يساعدني على خلق اتّزان في أفكار الأغاني".

يتسّم أسلوب +عزيز في الروك بامتناعه عن التقليد. ضمن جهوده لاكتشاف ألوان مختلفة من الموسيقى العالميّة، رجّح +عزيز فكرة مزج لغته الأم مع الموسيقى التي أحبها. ارتحل +عزيز إلى نيويورك ومن بعدها إلى نيو أورليانز، بهدف تطوير مهنته الموسيقية. ويقول في ذلك: ”تطلّب منّي الأمر ست سنوات في نيويورك كي أستدرك أنني لن أتمكّن من تكوين فرقة هناك. بعد ذلك، سجلت ألبومًا فرديًا وشددت الرحال للجنوب الأمريكي“.

”... ما يقومون به من مزجٍ لأنماط موسيقى العالم القديم والجديد نَجَم عنه وقع ممتاز على الأذن، سواءً في حفلات الشواء أو المهرجانات الخارجية، أو في أي مسرح داخلي، أو في سماعات الرأس، أو في السماعات عالية الجودة“ .

🎷 Nick Ferreirae is a tenor sax player originally from San Diego, California. He moved to New Orleans in 2013 to study jazz in the city of its birth at Tulane University. While his musical focus is primarily jazz, Kuwaisiana has allowed him to explore other styles of musical expression while incorporating his jazz knowledge.

Besides music, Nick loves travel, the outdoors, beer, Star Wars, the ocean, and New Orleans. Some of his influences and favorite musicians/groups are Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Snarky Puppy, Tower of Power, BADBADNOTGOOD, Kanye West, NxWorries, Led Zeppelin, Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Frank Ocean, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus.

Patrick Driscoll 🥁 has over 16 years of experience in the world of percussive arts. He cut his teeth with Chicago bands Get up with the Get Downs, Videobug, and Dust Bunnies.

Upon recently moving to the beautiful city of New Orleans, he has been privileged to play with KUWAISIANA. He is also an educator, teaching young children the basics of brass band music as part of an after-school program for the Art Klub. His performance hijinx over the years have led him to open up for Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Youngblood Brass Band, The Diplomats of Solid Sound, and Low Cut Connie. It should be noted he is also an ardent lover of cats.

🎺 Dehan Elçin hails from Istanbul, Turkey where he was born and raised. He started his musical journey with piano when he was three years old and a few years later he started studying classical piano part-time at the Istanbul Conservatory. He picked up the trumpet in middle school and it has been his primary instrument since.

During high school, he became very interested in jazz and attended the Bahcesehir University certificate program. Upon graduating high school, Dehan wanted to be closer to the roots of the musical idiom he wanted to study and chose to move to New Orleans to attend Tulane University. Kuwaisiana's vision of bringing different musical idioms together excites him a lot, as he wants to connect his Middle Eastern musical roots with the music of the Big Easy.
