Samson is about the beauty of sacrifice. A picture of failing to live well and the cost of doing your best to make it right.
The song loosely follows the story from the bible of a man named Samson. Given great power in order to protect and help others, instead he used his strength for his own gratification. In the end he was robbed of his power by the trick of a cowards and left weak and helpless. In a final act of contrition he asks for the strength to do what he should have in the beginning- to use it to free others who did not have the strength themselves. His strength returns long enough for him to break the foundations of the temple where he was kept, bringing the building and his enemies down on his own head.
The song is meant to play out that moment of deciding to put himself aside, brace for the end, do his worst and see what comes.
The lilting strings lead into a more intent movement around three minutes. The falling notes of the glockenspiel and the increasing intensity of the strings are meant to communicate the violent but somehow beautiful moment where love, sacrifice and destruction all move together in one moment. The final notes hint at the last bit of stone tumbling as dust settles over the scene.
