Latium, an ancient region of central Italy, was the heartland of the early Roman civilisation and is situated along the western coast, bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea. It stretched from the Tiber River in the north to the borders of Campania in the south, encompassing Rome and other significant cities like Lavinium and Alba Longa. Characterised by its fertile plains and rolling hills, Latium was initially inhabited by the Latin tribes, who spoke Latin and shared common religious and cultural traditions. This area became the political and cultural core of the Roman Empire, influencing art, language, law, and governance throughout the Western world. Today, modern Lazio covers much of ancient Latium’s territory, bearing remnants of its profound historical legacy in ruins, temples, and monuments scattered across the landscape.
