VIESTESANA
With the “Viestesana” style the trios’ research moves to the Gargano area, in Northern Apulia.
“The Viestesana is part of the tarantella tradition that stirs up memories of my youth, happiness, and of the ‘ronda’ (formed by dancers, musicians, and the public: The ‘ronda’ is, therefore, the chorus, which supports the dancers in the dance and delimits the “space” where the encounters take place). “The Gargano tradition has always fascinated me for its archaic and seemingly disharmonious melodies. In particular, the melody of the Viestesana in the version performed by one of the most exciting voices of the Gargano area Rocco di Mauro (recorded by Roberto Leydi and Diego Carpitella in 1966 and published by Salvatore Villani for Note), has always captivated me and I wanted to pay homage to it” says Maria Mazzotta.
“It contains a chromatic melodic passage that might not be harmonious when you first hear it, but which is frequent in the Blues scale, of a certain way of singing Blues in its origin” - adds Ernesto Nobili.
“Here too, as in “Sula nu puei stare”, the traditional triplet rhythm is easily and naturally attributable to typical rhythms found in Maghreb music or in Moroccan Gnawa which in turn have ancient roots in Blues music” clarifies Cristiano Della Monica.
