Remembrance & Renewal by The New Music Ensemble of the Black Hills

Remembrance & Renewal is a work that was commissioned by Troy Kilpatrick and The Journey Museum and Learning Center in 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Black Hills Flood of 1972. This disaster took the lives of 238 people and is regarded as one of the worst floods in American history.

Composed, orchestrated, and directed by Alex Massa, this was the New Music Ensemble of the Black Hills' debut performance. This project was funded and supported in part through funding from an IMLS Cares Grant and The Journey Museum and Learning Center. We thank them for this opportunity.

This record is dedicated to the lost stories of the Black Hills Flood of 1972, especially those from the indigenous community, whose dead were not counted. It is said that, after the flood, Native Americans in Rapid City were not allowed room in local hotels. Because of this, many people had to leave the area, and most did not return.

This record is also dedicated to the First Responders, National Guardspeople, and everyday citizens who risked life and limb to save as many lives as possible.
