Towards the end of 2015, MM’s self-titled EP on Her Records laid the foundations for the hard drum sound. Taking up the unfinished promise held out by DJ Master-D’s Dutch bubbling track ‘Mad Drumz’, the MM EP channelled the same ruthlessly compressed drumline samples into 5 tracks that found the elusive balance between nothing you’d really heard before and instantly accessible body music. The carnival palette and barely-there melodies helped shape the music policy at ETS parties, before the label emerged, and inspired a small wave of producers and DJs surrounding them.
After dropping proto hard drum tracks ‘QBT16’ (Her Records) and ‘Drum Pit’ (ETS000) in 2016/17, MM completes the circle with a solo release on ETS – Terrible Muscle (ETS004) – and again puts down the basis for future mutations. MM has always said he loves tracks that feel like endless build-ups and both here are exactly that. Terrible Muscle layers and switches percussion over fields of bitcrushed energy; HFL Track is hard drum via hard style, an unruly audio laser-show to grind your jaw to.
