morning light
and we’re warm beneath the sheets.
my cat jumps up and she smothers me in love
until,
two feet on the floor,
i’m up.
a long look at my love as i close the door,
turn,
and shuffle down the hall.
early dawn,
clay pigeon’s glistening on my lawn.
i hear that gurgling bong
and hey man, what’s this?

curtains up, lights on, kitchen’s mostly clean.
i wash some dishes.
the happy kitty eats.
open door,
my book and coffee on the porch.
feline in the herbs,
sleepy as a goddess in the sun.

hearty white and his nephew and butchy
make me smile and they forgive me my sacred sins.
they’re here with me and i don’t even ever have to speak.
a time machine.
hearty white, every day lightening the load for me.

rooms to roam,
i got closed doors and curtains for the noise.
open up my soul.
there’s no one watching me
dream of the lights
soaking.
dream until the nighttime takes me home.
