Elsewhere by Memory Warden

In the easternmost reaches of Tam's Peaks, the wizard Rithwaite made a discovery - the ruins of an ancient tower, likely dying place of an old enemy of the Order of Hands. In spite of explicit instructions by the Order, Rithwaite began his exploration with only the company of his familiar, a decision he would quickly come to regret. In the depths of the tower, he found a trove of tomes and grimoires - and the defenses put in place to keep them secret. Or, rather, his familiar, a small but round cat by the name of Fatbelly found them.

Fatbelly was stricken with a wasting curse unlike anything Rithwaite could comprehend. He bundled his companion up in his cloak and made haste for Orthollow, the home of his order, to seek aid in dispelling the curse. He did not know how long his friend had, but he meant to do everything in his power to save him.

Upon arriving at Orthollow and summoning the Council, Rithwaite was desperate. His pleas for aid were, however, denied. Not simply because of his disobedience, but because no member of the Council had the power required to break the curse. This was not his first infaction, but it would be his last. With their sympathies, The Council of Hands expelled Rithwaite from the Order and banished him from Orthollow. They could no longer tolerate his disobedience, however much promise he may have had as a mage.

The story of Elsewhere begins after his exile, as he marches through the Uglywood to the lake of Glass in a last ditch effort to save the life of his dearest friend. It was there that the most powerful magical creature he had ever encountered could be communed with. He sought the aid of Abertithe, Lady of Dreams and Wishes, a Duchess of the Fae. He certain that she would be able to help him. Just as certain as that it would be costly.
