Deus Eidola by Metempsychosis

"Nostalgia is a term thrown around a lot in recent times. With the advent of websites based exclusively on lists documenting “remember when?” moments, we are never far from being reminded of our earlier days, when things felt just a bit simpler through our naïve perception.

We seek this nostalgia in our music too, hunting down albums we coveted in our youth that trigger special moments that may have otherwise been long forgotten. We covet this music because it evokes feelings that comfort us in our most trying moments, and remind us that everything is going to be ok.

There is a magic to the music of Metempsychosis, a musical duo coming out of the outskirts of Detroit (a city longing for nostalgia), that generates that nostalgic feeling without actually playing it retro. Duo Neil Struble and Nick Cunningham have created a world unto themselves, burying themselves in their world of memories and creating music that breathes fond memories while challenging the listener with brand new ideas in music that is yearning to be heard.

Their latest full length, Deus Eidola, harkens back to the early 90s sitting in front of the warm, room-illuminating, glow of your big tube television, playing your favorite sprite-based adventures. Awe-inspiring synth work by Neil recreates the worlds we had to mostly imagine for ourselves, painting detailed strokes of future fantasy worlds long gone. Nick, on the other hand, uses his technical bass work to create a whole new context for which to explore these memories. Dynamic grooves and pulsing rhythm work take these memories and rocket them into the next century.

With Metempsychosis you get the sense that your fond memories are becoming dreams of a not-yet-seen future, where charming digital compositions with a retro nod are morphed into modern electronic masterpieces that are able to be appreciated on the dance floor or on your couch with a good set of headphones. Their digital foundation makes for an organic presentation, where nostalgia is teased, then taken away, forcing the listener to explore the future, but not without the help of a friendly memory."
