Lyrics
wintertown / november 2006 / may 31/07
well I’ve fallen into wintertown from a grey cloud in grey sky
& there’s one question not worth asking for the same reason & that’s ‘why’
turbulence rattles the teeth oh a percussion in the head
in someone else’s story I might be already dead
now the body falls just briefly out from the skin surprised
exposed for what I just might be gravity realized
grounded now in wintertown snow as black as soot
too late for the silence I think I’ll just stay put
grounded here in wintertown snow as dry as dust
the old blood of a memory well it flakes away like rust
terminal city, halfway there & the picture’s getting plain
Tim Horton’s selling doughnuts to the conspicuously sane
prairie flatness in the voice of the cute peroxide blonde
before the sound’s even left her lips oh the gist’s already gone
now small talk at the bar let fall so careless to the floor
swallow on the despair, mouth makes room for even more
[chorus]
suitcase packed so careful like a brilliant little mind
careful what he look for so careful not to find
improbable bird, it belly-flop hard against the wind
falling forward into faith like the penitent who’s sinned
now the words are getting scarcer long before the ink’s run out
fills the poet’s mouth with the empty taste of doubt [pause / repeat line]
[chorus] repeat ½ of last line the old blood of a memory….
