Mixtape by Jubilee Art Camp Kids: Songs from The Friendship Bees & The Knights of The Round Potatoes

32 Kids came together for the Jubilee Arts Camp. They were divided into two groups, The Friendship Bees made of 7-10 year olds, and The Knights of the Round Potatoes made of 9-13 year olds. They worked with Katelyn Biehn and Stephen Preston to write a song each. On day 2 they had to produce and re-record the vocals for a full pop treatment of their acoustic demo with producer and electronic music teacher Nathan McKay. On day 3 they had to gather field recording samples and compose a beat with their samples that ranged from burps to weed whacker noises to the banging of recycling bins. The Friendship Bees finished their first song so fast they had time to write a second song that was a pure experiment in improvisation. They all stepped out of their comfort zone into new territory to create a song that was surprisingly a step in the jazz fusion neo-soul direction. For many it was their first foray into the genre. Many delightful unexpected performances occurred in the production and a cool wonky vibe was created that was impressively mature for kids so fledgling in music production.
