ALBUM REVIEW:
Neon Lies: a minimalistic, darkwave synth project from Zagreb, Croatia, a city you likely recognize from Doomtown Records-branded projects such as The Celetoids and Modern Delusion (doomtownrecords.bandcamp.com). Unsurprisingly, Neon Lies is made up by the same man who’s responsible for the “vocals, lyrics, recordings, and hocus pocus” behind Modern Delusion, Goran Lautar, and appropriately makes a heavy nod towards the brand of music presented therein, specifically in the group’s darkened synth-orientation. Neon Lies takes those gloomy qualities and emphasizes them to a sobering degree, to the point of near incohesiveness; the delay-heavy vocals, discordant synth tones, a blown-out drum machine, all of it culminates into a rare breed of minimal synth-punk that incestualizes with aspects of electro-industrial and darkwave alike, screaming of self-induced despondency through frantic experimentation. Given its sparse instrumentation of Neon Lies, its self-titled tape (released on Cosmic Brood Records) is surprisingly hard-hitting. / Jimmy YT blog /
