The Arias - Aria for Voice and Plastic and Aria for Breath and Glass - are a duo of early studio works from Nichola Scrutton Archive,
The Arias were inspired by the materiality of two gesso ‘Opera’ panels created by Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh, Opera of the Seas and Opera of the Winds, and composed as a response to the plastic debris crisis in the pacific ocean. As indicated by the track titles, the source materials are voice and plastic, and breath/voice and glass respectively.
Originally composed for a concert in 2007 at University of Glasgow, the Arias had various international broadcasts including: RadiaLx Radio Art Festival, Lisbon; ‘Soundgate’, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg; Sonic Art Oxford Online Juke Box; Soundscape Room, Digital Arts Week, Zurich; International EA Listening Room Project, Fullerton, CA.
Margaret McDonald Mackintosh's 'Opera' panels were fixed to the piano in a music salon designed by C.R. Mackintosh in 1906.
