Somewhere between a scrapbook and a puzzle, the collage Philadelphia-based producer and rapper Material Girl finds himself putting together on Tangram cuts and pastes not only samples and genres, but emotions and turmoil.
One second, life may be beautiful like the solemn, resonating notes of a piano; the next, turbulent and unnerving, like a saxophone blasting its way through the most abrasive of free jazz. What Material Girl understands the most on Tangram is that all of these fragments form not just a bigger picture, but the unique puzzle that we all spend our lifetimes solving.
Tangram is as much an observation as it is a work of art. No emotion is black or white, and no life is brilliant or faulty. It's all a series of contrasts that will seemingly never end until nobody is left to observe them.
