Open road closed
Clouded by a charcoal sky
Air so thick, the Badlands need to breathe
Wildfire's wrath morphs into a muted veil,
Rendering what was golden, brown, red, and green in black and white

Caught a heavy glimpse of the real USA
When I stopped in Butte, Montana
On my second day driving west
Mines line the highway
It makes me really sad
The mountains seem to cry for the loss of what they had
Hidden by a blanket of greed, narrow minds, and unrest

Headed to the coast,
Noticing the smoke receding
As I go past Tacoma
Then I've arrived
Where music in the leaves,
Wind in aspen trees,
And the steady unrelenting rumble of the sea's my company
Two thousand miles away from my home
