"Figure 17 - A research volunteer at NYU learns to relax by listening to the clicks she hears in the earphones every time her forehead muscle contracts. When this happens, it generates a very small electric voltage which is sensed by the metal contacts seen attached to the subject's forehead. These voltages are fed into a special amplifier which filters out those signals which are irrelevant and then multiplies the muscle voltages enough to create a clicking sound in the earphones. In that way the subject hears even the most insignificant changes in her muscle tension."
