But it's not the thrill of discovery that moves the scientist; it's the tale of light and love that touches her heart and works its alchemy inside her. She finds herself thinking of the star-gazer with a quiet euphoria, her defences falling away as she opens her heart to the possibilities of love. Ever the scientist however she tries to view her findings objectively. The Butcher was open to love once and the darkness crept inside him to make him the monster he is today. If you open up to love, you open up to pain. The scientist sits at the foot of the lighthouse and wonders if the change in her will bring darkness or light.
