Hand aufs Herz, wer braucht ein Soloalbum auf dem Kontrabass? Wer jetzt glaubt, diese Fragestellung würde schon die Antwort vorgeben, irrt gewaltig. Und wer meint, die Ära der großen Bass-Soloalben von Barre Philips, Gary Peacock, Dave Holland oder Michael Formanek würde weit zurückliegen, muss sich jetzt von dem in Berlin lebenden Engländer Phil Donkin eines Besseren belehren lassen. Denn sein neues Werk „Walk Alone“ ist ein Meisterwerk des Jazz-Bass. Und das gar nicht nur wegen Donkins beeindruckender Virtuosität und Wendigkeit auf dem Bass, sondern noch viel mehr, weil er auf seinem Instrument tiefgreifende Geschichten zu erzählen weiß.

Mit dem Plan für ein Soloalbum trug sich der äußerst gruppendienliche Bassist schon lange. Aber sich mit einem solchen Plan zu tragen und ihn dann auch in die Tat umzusetzen, ist zweierlei, bekennt Donkin. „Es ist eine Sache, ein Solo in einem Song zu spielen oder ihn mit einem Intro auf dem Bass einzuleiten. Aber ich hatte das Gefühl, ich könne als Musiker wachsen, wenn ich genug Material für ein ganzes Album finde, das das Interesse eines Hörers bindet. Das war für mich die Herausforderung.“

Während des Lockdowns war plötzlich und unerwartet die Zeit vorhanden, den Traum in die Wirklichkeit zu übersetzen und sich zielgerichtet Gedanken über Form und Richtung des Albums zu machen. Zunächst bestand der Plan darin, die Platte allein im Home Recording aufzunehmen. Doch Donkin ist ein selbstkritischer Geist. Deshalb beschloss er, den Fokus ganz auf die Musik zu legen und die technischen Belange in die Hände eines Toningenieurs zu geben. Das Ergebnis sind neun Kurztrips von anderthalb bis knapp sieben Minuten, die nicht nur den Bass aus völlig unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zeigen, sondern verschiedene Facetten von Phil Donkins musikalischen Visionen offenlegen.

Mal streicht er ganz sanft über die Saiten, mal malträtiert er den Bass mit ungebremster Kraft, in einigen Stücken kombiniert er beide Herangehensweisen. Barock Anmutendes trifft auf dem gegenwärtigen Augenblick Abgerungenes, Referenzen an die Jazzgeschichte wechseln sich mit genuinen Donkinismen ab. Mal spielt er nach innen, mal nach außen, hier ist er ganz solo, da legt er bis zu fünf Stimmen seines Instruments übereinander. Was immer er tut, bleibt er immer ganz bei sich und geht doch zugleich stets ganz weit aus sich heraus.

Bei alledem ist sich Phil Donkin durchaus bewusst, dass er einen schmalen Grat beschreitet. Nur Weniges kann in der Musik so schnell nerven wie ein Bass-Solo. Aber gerade darin bestand für den Tieftontaucher die Verlockung, ein solches Album einzuspielen. „Es ist stets angsteinflößend und gefährlich, dich Erwartungen zu widersetzen“, reflektiert er rückblickend. „Bass-Soli sind langweilig? Ich werde euch das Gegenteil beweisen. Ich liebe es, jede Art von Stereotyp zu hinterfragen. Ich selbst musste viel üben, denn ich schrieb ein paar Stücke, die ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt selbst noch nicht spielen konnte. Die Ansage richtete sich deshalb nicht zuletzt an mich selbst. Es ging mir darum, das gesamte Spektrum der Möglichkeiten auszunutzen, die sich auf dem Kontrabass bieten. An diesen Punkt zu kommen, braucht Zeit.“

Eine der persönlichen Herausforderungen, die Donkin beschreibt, war das Spiel mit dem Bogen. Nie zuvor hat er bei Aufnahmen den Bogen benutzt. Innerhalb einer Band, ist der Bass nur selten gut zu hören, weil er meist das leiseste und tiefste Instrument ist. Um seine Erforschung der Klangmöglichkeiten voll zur Geltung kommen zu lassen, hatte er deshalb gar keine andere Wahl, als ihn als Soloinstrument aufzunehmen. „Walk Alone“ ist nicht zuletzt eine Dokumentation seiner persönlichen Forschungsarbeit.

Das Gewebe, das dem Album zugrunde liegt, besteht aus Farben, Kontrasten und Konturen. Donkin wollte die Musik so abwechslungsreich wie möglich gestalten und auf Wiederholungen jeder Art, seien sie musikalisch, atmosphärisch oder emotional, verzichten. Auf intensive Momente folgen entspannte Phasen, bevor Donkin die Intensität wieder anziehen kann. Er will es dem Hörer so leicht wie möglich machen, sich durch seine Welten zu navigieren. „In dieser Hinsicht unterscheidet sich ‚Walk Alone’ gar nicht von den Alben, die ich mit einer Band einspiele“, findet Donkin. „Nur dass ich es diesmal eben auf einem Soloinstrument spiele.“

Vor den Aufnahmen wusste Donkin nicht einmal, wie die Platte am Ende klingen würde. In der Verschwiegenheit der allgemeinen Isolation ließ er sich ganz und gar auf sein Instrument ein. Statt sich hinter dem Bass zu verstecken, ging er auf Konfrontation mit dem Instrument. Phil Donkin mit seinem Bass, Phil Donkin gegen seinen Bass, Phil Donkin über seinen Bass und der Bass über Phil Donkin. Das Instrument als Freund, Partner, Alter Ego, Gegenüber und in wenigen auch in Momenten totaler Erschöpfung auch als kreativer Feind. „Ich liebe einfach den Klang eines Kontrabass. Ich liebe die Kraft der Resonanz dieses Instruments. Wenn sich die Schwingungen des Bass’ auf meinen Körper übertragen, ist das für mich wie eine Therapie. Ich spiele den Kontrabass nun seit 22 Jahren. Das ist eine lange Beziehung. Wie eine Ehe mit all ihren Problemen und Kämpfen. Aber jetzt habe ich einen Punkt erreicht, an dem ich alle technischen Probleme bewältigt habe und das Spiel auf dem Bass einfach nur noch genießen kann.“

„Walk Alone“ ein reflektiertes Selbstporträt, das offener und ehrlicher nicht sein könnte. Phil Donkin stellt absolute Augenhöhe zu seinen Hörerinnen und Hörern her und bildet mit seinem Bass und seiner Hörerschaft eine magische Dreierallianz

Hand on heart, who needs a solo album on the double bass? Anyone who thinks that the era of the great bass solo albums by Barre Philips, Gary Peacock, Dave Holland or Michael Formanek is far behind must now be taught otherwise by the Berlin resident; Englishman Phil Donkin, for his new work "Walk Alone" is a masterpiece of jazz bass. And not only because of Donkin's impressive virtuosity and agility on the bass, but even more because he knows how to tell profound stories on his instrument.

The bassist, who is extremely helpful to the group, had been planning a solo album for a long time, but embracing such a plan and then actually putting it into practice are two different things, admits Donkin. “It's one thing to play a solo in a song or introduce it with an intro on the bass. But I felt I could grow as a musician if I could find enough material for an entire album that would hold a listener's interest. That was the challenge for me.”

During the lockdown, there was suddenly and unexpectedly the time to translate the dream into reality and to think purposefully about the form and direction of the album. Initially, the plan was to record the record solely in home recording, but Donkin is a self-critical spirit. That's why he decided to focus entirely on the music and put the technical matters in the hands of a sound engineer. The result is nine short trips from one and a half to almost seven minutes, which not only show the bass from completely different perspectives, but also reveal different facets of Phil Donkin's musical visions.

Sometimes he gently strokes the strings, sometimes he abuses the bass with unbridled power, in some pieces he combines both approaches. Baroque elements meet what has been wrested from the present moment, references to jazz history alternate with genuine donkinism. Sometimes he plays inwards, sometimes outwards, here he is completely solo. Sometimes he superimposes up to five parts of his instrument on top of each other. Whatever he does, he always stays with himself and yet at the same time always goes very far out of himself.

In all of this, Phil Donkin is well aware that he is walking a fine line. Few things in music can get on your nerves like a bass solo. But that was precisely the temptation for the low-pitched diver to record such an album. "It's always scary and dangerous to defy expectations," he reflects. “Bass solos are boring? I will prove you wrong. I love to challenge any kind of stereotype. I had to practice a lot myself because I wrote a few pieces that I couldn't play myself at the time. The announcement was therefore not least aimed at myself. I wanted to use the entire spectrum of possibilities that the double bass offers. Getting to that point takes time.”

One of the personal challenges Donkin describes was playing with the bow. He had never used the bow in recording before. Within a band, the bass is rarely heard well because it is usually the quietest and deepest instrument. Therefore, in order to fully exploit his exploration of the possibilities of sound, he had no choice but to record it as a solo instrument. Last but not least, “Walk Alone” is a documentation of his personal research work.

The fabric on which the album is based consists of colours, contrasts and contours. Donkin wanted the music to be as varied as possible and to avoid repetition of any kind, be it musical, atmospheric or emotional. Intense moments are followed by relaxed periods before Donkin can pick up the intensity again. He wants to make it as easy as possible for the listener to navigate through his worlds. "In that way, 'Walk Alone' is no different than the albums I record with a band," says Donkin. "Only this time I'm playing it on a solo instrument."

Before recording, Donkin didn't even know how the record would end up sounding. In the secrecy of general isolation, he gave himself completely to his instrument. Instead of hiding behind the bass, he confronted the instrument. Phil Donkin with his bass, Phil Donkin against his bass, Phil Donkin over his bass and the bass over Phil Donkin. The instrument as a friend, partner, alter ego, opposite and in a few moments of total exhaustion as a creative enemy. “I just love the sound of a double bass. I love the power of resonance of this instrument. When the vibrations of the bass are transferred to my body, it's like therapy for me. I've been playing the double bass for 22 years now. It's a long relationship. Like a marriage with all its problems and struggles. But now I've reached a point where I've gotten over all the technical issues and can just enjoy playing”

"Walk Alone" is a reflective self-portrait that couldn't be more open and honest. Phil Donkin creates absolute eye level with his listeners and forms a magical alliance of three with his bass and his audience.

I’ve had the pleasure of playing with Phil Donkin over the years, including one of my quartet tours when he pinch-hit for Drew Gress and hooked up seamlessly with the band (Ralph Alessi and Joey Baron), and another when he came to Japan with John Abercrombie’s quartet. I have a vivid memory from our week in Tokyo, of a moment when the pulse was swinging so hard that John was almost bouncing in his chair and grinning a mile wide. Phil certainly had a lot to do with that.

“Walk Alone,” which you are holding in your hands, is something else again. Here’s one of the best bassists I know tackling the most challenging format for any musician—playing solo, shouldering the burden of making meaningful music with no help from anybody else. And Phil succeeds beautifully, exploring the possibilities of the music and the instrument in all manner of ways. You’ll find lots to dig here—my personal favorites are “Numb Worm” and “Crucifixion”--and I think young bassists will be falling over each other to check this album out.

After my first listen, I wanted to go back and listen to it all again—so I did. And so, I suspect, will you.
