Gavin Bryars writes: “Philip and I first worked together 17 years ago on a performance of The Sinking of the Titanic in the Teatro Malibran, Venice. Since then, we worked on a number of different versions of Titanic, including a tour in the centenary year of the ship’s sinking, always with him playing a 10-12 minute prologue before the band came in. The last time we did this was at the end of 2019, the 50th anniversary of me writing the piece. Listening to him, and waiting to play, was always a special moment in the performance for me. One of the recent big projects we performed was a full evening ballet, Pneuma, with choreography by Carolyn Carlson at the Bordeaux Opera House. For this Philip provided interludes between my full orchestral sections. Here are three of those interludes...”

Philip Jeck (1952-2022) worked with old records and record players salvaged from junk shops turning them to his own purposes. He really did play them as musical instruments, creating an intensely personal language that evolves with each added part of a record. Philip Jeck makes geniunely moving and transfixing music, where we hear the art not the gimmick.
