Hello Again by PIMO (Pixy & Moro)

"What if the stars in the universe are the music scores?"

I started making this album having such a weird idea in my mind during the pandemic.

I have been recording the album since September 2021 and finally finished after 2 years.

This is a conceptual album & all the songs are connected. The lyrics are inspired by Hitchcock's TV shows & old Japanese tales mixed with our personal stories. I'm going to explain each song in the album below (Warning: Very nerdy content!).

もしも宇宙の星々が楽譜だったら?
そんなことを考えながら作ったアルバム。

コロナ禍の２０２１年９月頃から制作開始。今までで１番制作に時間を費やしたアルバムになりました。編集も量が多すぎて、途中頭がおかしくなりそうだったので、もう次は全部一発録りで済まそう、と心に誓いました。(笑)

コンセプトアルバムで、曲は全部繋がっています。歌詞のストーリーは当時観ていた８０年代のヒッチコックのテレビ番組や日本のお伽話などに影響を受けました。かなりマニアックな内容ですが、ここからアルバムの各曲を説明していきます。

１　 4 + 7

This is the theme song for the album. As the title suggests, it's a polyrhythmic song of 4 & 7 beat. Like Sgt. Pepper album by Beatles, it has a theme song & it connects to the whole album.

There is a reference from the classical Indian Teen Tal & Bach (BWV 812) in the bass. Probably only the music nerds will notice this.

このアルバムのテーマ曲ですね。タイトルの通り、４拍子と７拍子が交わったポリリズムのインスト曲です。ビートルズのサージェントペパーみたく、アルバムのテーマ曲があって、全体に繋がってる構成になってます。

途中ベースがインドのクラシック音楽Teen Talやバッハの曲（BWV 812）の一部を引用しています。たぶんマニアの人しか気づかないかな。

２　Hello Again

This song used to be synthesizer-only music. It was made based on the idea that if the stars in the universe are music scores. Pixy later added the lyrics.

The melody is the same from the beginning to the end, but I experiment with the chord that changes every time.

Because this song was made around the time when the covid was almost over, the lyrics are related to the feeling we had about opening up.

この曲は元々シンセだけで、もし星の軌道が楽譜だったら、という考えに基づいて作りました。そこに後付けでメロディを入れて、ピクシーが歌詞を付けました。

メロディが最初から最後まで一緒なのですが、もし毎回コードを変えたらどうなるんだろう、という遊びもしています。

コロナが終息してきたらへんで作ったので、歌詞もそれに関係していますね。

３　BWV 812

I arranged Bach's “French Suite No.1” for synthesizer and guitar as the introduction to the next song.

バッハのフランス組曲をシンセとギターでアレンジしました。次の曲へのイントロとして使っています。

４　Baroque Cat

This song is about a company man who gets scammed by the sketchy ad on the bus & he turns into a cat on the baroque cat planet.

It's one of the hardest songs to play because of the 5/4 beat. I originally wanted Pixy to sing this song, but the rhythm was too hard for her & she gave up. I had to use my demo vocal after all.

バロックキャットの星でバケーションしよう！という怪しい広告に騙されて、猫に姿を変えられてしまう、というようなストーリーの歌詞です。

５拍子の曲で演奏が難しい曲。元々ピクシーに歌わせたかったけど、練習してもリズムを理解してもらえなかったので、結局自分がピクシーのために録ったデモの歌をそのまま使うことに。

５　Tornado Waltz

I wrote the lyrics with the impression of this song being musically dissonant and broken. Then I came up with a story about a hot air balloon. The story is like not sure if it's a reality or dream. It must be influenced by some of Hitchcock’s TV shows.

There is a reference from Miles Davis' "All Blues" in the guitar solo. Probably some jazz lovers might notice this.

The later part is even more nerdy. The bass line becomes the cycle of 5th (E B F# C# G# D# Bb F C G D A) and goes back to E to connect to the next song.

不協和音が多く、音も飛び飛びだったので、壊れた雰囲気と熱気球のイメージだけで歌詞を書きました。夢と現実がわからないようなストーリーです。これもヒッチコックさんの影響ですかね。

ちなみに、ギターソロはマイルスデイビスのAll Bluesを少し引用してます。ジャズ好きな人は気付くかな。

後半部分はさらにマニアックですが、ベースが完全５度のサイクルになっています。(E B F# C# G# D# Bb F C G D A) で１２音一周回ってEに戻って、次の曲に繋がります。

６　Absolute Monarchy - 絶対君主制

The song is about an SM queen and her M man. It's probably the most stupid song in this album & it used to be called "Cheap Idol Song".
I wrote most of the lyrics imagining Pixy will probably like it. Whatever Pixy likes works the best for this band, so I also did this for all the other songs in the album (Making sure Pixy likes all of it…).

I believe the album can have both stupid and serious songs like Japanese Animation Urusei Yatsura's TV shows in the 80s.


SMの女王様とM男の曲。作品中1番ふざけた曲で、元々は安っぽいアイドルの曲ってタイトルでした。

歌詞はピクシーが好きそうな感じを想像して僕が書きました。基本ピクシーが好きそうな歌詞が正解なので、他の曲も全部ピクシーこんなん好きかな、とか想像しながら作ってました。

うる星やつらの作品みたいにアルバムもギャグ回やシリアス回があっていいと思うんですよね。

７　Bear the Stoker

There’s a secret theme for this song. The M man from the last song became the stoker & was looking for the queen. Also, I couldn't go back to Japan due to covid, so the feeling is in the lyrics.

The story is about a man trying to find someone by taking the airplane, but he got kicked out of the town because he looks like a bear. He tried to go overseas with his raft, but actually he could have taken the airplane because the flight rules changed. The lyrics were written around the time when the flight rule changes every week during the covid.

Rhythmically, it's kind of a hard song to play. The melody stays in 4/4, but the background music is dotted quarter & it gets shifted. This song was inspired by "Lung" by Motohiko Hamase (only the feeling), "Disko" by Swedish band Komeda, and "Meditation" by Charles Mingus.

ストーリーの裏テーマとして、前曲のM男が海を超えてストーカー化して女王様を探しているってのがありますが、直接は言ってないですね。あとコロナでなかなか海外から日本に帰れなかった時期なので、そんな気持ちもこもってたりするかも。

ある男が空港に行って海を渡ろうとするけど、見た目が熊なので町から追い出される。代わりにいかだを作って海を渡ろうするけど、その道中でルールがまた変わって実は飛行機乗れてました、というような内容のストーリー。歌詞を書いたのが、ちょうどコロナで飛行機のルールが毎週のように変わっていた時期なので、それが影響してますね。

リズム的にやや難しい曲で、メロディは普通の４拍子なのに、バックの演奏が全て付点四分音符で少しずつずれていく様になっています。濱瀬元彦さんのLungという曲（雰囲気だけ）と、スウェーデンのバンドKomedaのDisko、チャールス・ミンガスのMeditationみたいなかっこいい曲書きたいなーと思って作っていました。

８　Welcome to the Utopia

I really like the music from the composer Lowell Liebermann and I was studying his music on my own. Then I found he was using 12 tones in a more musical way. He made a beautiful melody using 12 major chords.

Using the same method, I created a different sequence of 12 major chords (Bb F# C D E C# Eb A F G Ab B). I added the melody and harmony later & finally this song was made.

Lowell Liebermanというアメリカのクラシック作曲家の音楽が好きで、個人的に研究してたんですね。そしたら曲の一部にある作曲手法を使ってるのを見つけて。彼は１２個のメジャーコードで素晴らしいメロディを作りあげていたんですね。（十二音技法という作曲手法の応用。）

僕も真似して、全てメジャーコードで全く違う組み合わせのBb F# C D E C# Eb A F G Ab Bの配列を作って、そこにメロディとハーモニーを付けてこの曲ができました。

９　The Cycle of Universe

This is a chiptune song that I want to sound like each star in the universe has its own sound. There are all kinds of stars in the universe, like the ones with long or short orbits, the moon, and the meteorite that randomly moves around. I think it’s influenced by Steve Reich & the game music of Earthbound (The Sky Walker).

チップチューン（マイクロチップだけで作る音楽）で星の軌道を表現したような曲。周期の短い星や長い星、月、ランダムに飛び交う隕石にそれぞれ音を持たせたらこんな感じになるかな、と思いながら作ってました。
スティーブ・ライヒ、マザー２のスカイウォーカーの音楽とかの影響あるかも。

１０　Looking for the Nest

The lyrics are kind of kidding, but there is a more serious topic behind it, like "Where is my home that I can go back to?". I think the answer lies in the last song in the album. The lyrics were kind of a joke, but I really hope someone can give us a free ride on a private jet in the future.

歌詞が冗談めいた感じでごまかしていますが、本当は自分の帰る場所ってどこなんだろうっていうテーマがあります。そしてその答えはアルバムの最後の曲に繋がっていると思います。冗談めいた歌詞と言いましたが、プライベートジェットにタダ乗りしたいって気持ちだけは本物です。

１１　Itaro

I thought it was nice to make the lyrics out of our own experiences, so I made a love story about the laundromat that we used in Milan. The photo festivals in the lyrics are also the ones we participated in the past.

The last bird song at the end was recorded in Lucca’s hotel in the early morning thanks to the jet lag.

自分の経験から歌詞を作るといいかなと思ってたので、実際に行って使った、イタリア・ミラノのコインランドリーを題材にラブストーリーを書きました。歌詞に出てくるフォトフェスティバルの街の名前も、前にピクシーと参加した実在するものです。

最後の鳥の声のサンプルはルッカという町のホテルで時差ボケを利用して早朝に録音したものです。

１２　Uranus

This is the song for praising the female leader in Uranus. It used to be an anti-war song, but it started to sound hypocritical, so somehow it ended up a sexual implication.

In the lyrics, "Army of Me", and "All You Need Is Love", of course are the famous song titles from Bjork & Beatles.

The chords are very strange using only perfect 5th on both left & right hand. The rhythmic pattern is a loop of 16 8 4 2 1 2 4 8 (3/8 in between) like a mirror structure.

This is actually the earliest song I made in 2009 after going to the master class of the saxophone player Steve Coleman.

ウラヌスという星の女性リーダーを讃える歌。元々は戦争を批判する曲だったんですが、あまりに直接的すぎるし、偽善者っぽいのも嫌なので、何故か下ネタに落ち着いてしまいました。歌詞に出てくる”Army of Me”はビョーク、”All You Need Is Love”はビートルズの有名な曲のタイトルですね。

ピアノの左手で完全５度、右手で完全５度だけを組み合わせただけの変わったコード。
気付きにくいですが、リズムが３／８を挟んだ、16 8 4 2 1 2 4 8のループになっていて、鏡のような構成になってます。実は２００９年に作ったアルバム内で一番古い曲で、サックスフォン奏者のSteve Colemanさんの講義を見に行った直後に作りました。

１３　Chestnut Girl

This song was inspired by the old Japanese tale "The Battle Between Monkey and Crab". This may be one of the most simple & playful songs in the album with only 2 instrumental tracks.

さるかに合戦にインスピレーション受けて作った曲です。音楽的に一番遊んでる曲かも。

１４　Yabaiyatsu no Melody - ヤバいやつのメロディ

The title means "Dangerous Man's Melody".
I used to watch Japanese music TV shows in the 90s & there was a famous city pop singer who came to the show. He had been treated as a dangerous person by the TV personnels & I thought it was really funny. This made me think it could be interesting if the singer is ACTUALLY a dangerous person.

The arrangement is like you found a cassette tape in the storage room & there was a weird song inside.

To remind people that this is close to the end of this album, the rhythmic pattern of 4 + 7 (theme song) comes back at the end of this song.

ヤバいやつのメロディ。
昔、とある昭和の歌番組でとある有名歌手がヤバいやつ扱いされてたのがツボで、シティポップみたいな爽やかなイメージの歌い手が本当にヤバい人だったらおもしろいな、と思いこの曲を作りました。家の押入れから古いテープが出てきて、なんだかわけのわからない曲が入ってた、みたいなアレンジをめざして作っていました。

曲の最後はこのアルバムのテーマの彷彿させるように、７拍子と４拍子の一曲目のテーマと同じビートに変わります。このアルバムもそろそろ終わりに近いですよ、とお知らせしているような構成で、次でやっと最後の曲になります。

１５　Sousesune Momo-chan

The last song is the only song that Pixy composed in this album. This is also my favorite song in the album.

In my hometown, there is a song playing in the evening from the speakers in the mountains. It echoes and reminds people it’s time to go home, kind of like a lullaby. I was trying to make this kind of sound effect.

It probably means the person I can go back to is Pixy after all.

最後の曲は、唯一ピクシーがこのアルバムで作曲した曲で、個人的にお気に入りの曲です。

僕の地元は、夕方になると山から音楽が流れるんですが、それが山々でエコーするようになってて。そんな感じの音響にしたかったですかね。もう家に帰る時間だと教えてくれる、子守唄のような。

いろいろやったけど、結局自分にとって帰るところはピクシーってことなんでしょうかね。
