I mused as they entered my world

A glance demanded encores
Of my half-written scores
So I gave them willingly
All these sad soliloquies
Explained what they meant to me
A past life forgotten
Lanes once walked in the autumn
Brings pain to recall them
Don’t feel it often enough
That’s why it’s always rough
When the paint hits the brush
Startled like a thrush
Taking off skyward
Looking like a diamond
Rhyming

They asked me what I did it all for
If there was something in those lanes I ignored
Or something that I didn’t have before
That could change the outcomes I ensured
I replied with my best attempt
To accurately express what they meant
But the words fumbled from my lips
Fell to the cement
They picked them up to inspect
Held them close and peered at my ghosts
Secrets hidden innermost
Locked in literary code
Of one who once captured my soul
Of another who upended my world
My environs began to twirl
Words that they held in their hands flowered and unfurled
They told me not to be scared, to live life
Pulled me by my hand into a light
It was so bright
