Arctic Summer by Regular Expression

Arctic Summer began as a composition in Dynamic Tonality's XronoMorph loop generator. I was borrowing a Tascam 464 cassette portastudio from my friend, and recorded an improvised performance from the software to tape. I didn't think much of it, except for a minute which I liked. I turned off the DBX noise reduction and recorded the short clip back to my computer.

Months later, I was working on a documentary video in Igloolk, Nunavut during the summer solstice. It was late, but kids were playing outside my hotel room in the night sun. I re-listened to my tape experiment and slowed down the audio using PaulStretch, carefully adjusting the software settings until I felt no friction to the flow of sound. Then I wrapped a shirt around my head and went to sleep.

Back in Montréal, I used this music to meditate through the noisy summer construction season, and I thought about the north. There is a cliff at the far end of Igloolik, and I remember looking out from the top at the little houses gathered around the frozen bay. When I turned around, an endless ice-field stretched to the horizon, and the sun blared in a crystal haze.
