Shed Boys by Richard Sinclair's Shed Boys

A late evening jam session recorded by Jeremy Darby at Oakwood Studios in Herne Bay.

In February 1982, Richard was asked to put together a new band for a gig at the 'certain strange' Dolphin Hotel, on the seafront in Herne Bay - then still the home of Old Peculiar and the Weldon family. Well-done!

Pip Pyle and Vince Clarke were certainly a strange combination to bring together and this is reflected in the recording. "Shed Boys", of course Pip's choice of title from his love of the Chelsea football team.

The gig took place in the evening of 22 February and to follow mass consumption of the 'wee drink' from the Dolphin bar, with all the kit gathered up in the van and Jeremy Darby secured as engineer, the 4 piece headed off to Graeme Quinton-Jones' studio in Mortimer Street opposite Woolworths. Oakwood, the very studio where Caravan's "Back To Front" album sessions had been laid down on '15 track recording' in late 1981, also referenced in "Back To Herne Bay Front".

Flow of the Old Peculiar helped the boys think (along with the blow-age), leading to a late night jam over the choice of a curry in a hurry, from the borrowed menu of the local takeaway.

Jeremy set the oxide rolling and it was not until the early hours of the next morning that these weary "Shed Boys", left Darby fast asleep in the studio. Traversing down the several flights of stairs and out a side door of the Ranchero's caf', to reappear in Mortimer Street, the band broke up and forgot all about the tapes!

We're still looking for the tape of the gig at the Dolphin Hotel and hope to bring this to you in the future. Until then, here is a bit more for Pip's diehard fans and for the Herne Bay history folks.

Previously released by Mark Hewins in 1992 on cassette tape and later CD issues as "T-Mit", this material is now issued here by Richard as originally intended under the band name of Shed Boys.
