Honky tonk piano litters Kitty Wells’ 1961 album ‘Heartbreak U.S.A.’, the title track of which was her third and final number one on the US country singles chart, staying at the top spot for four weeks during a twenty-three week chart run. From there the heartaches kept on a coming as the whole album, although hardly mournful, is a jukebox-friendly bunch of beer-supping laments to lost love including the gorgeous steel-led ‘Heartaches By The Number’, a Ray Price tune that was later covered by The Byrds and Hank William’s perennial ‘Cold, Cold Heart’. It’s a tune for every occasion platter for sure.
