1335 by Rosa†Crvx

If you look at the last few releases, Rosa†Crvx seemed to have gone quiet. But the formation around Olivier Tarabo never disappeared from the face of the earth. Above all, their live performances remain forever in the memory of anyone lucky enough to experience them live. Be it the impressive carillon, the automatic skeleton drum band, the incredibly powerful vocals or the ‘Danse de la Terre’ performance – the visual elements are just as important as the auditory ones. They are constantly working on improving the live sounds. Mastermind Olivier Tarabo also organised the only gothic festival in France, ‘Nuits Dark Ritual’, which took place ten times in total. He now concentrates on his own crypt (‘La Crypte’), where bands perform every two months in a relaxed club atmosphere, followed by an after-show party and DJs.

Thanks to such a concert the idea for the video shoot for ‘1335’ – which was written in 2024 and has already been played live several times – was born. At the turn of the year, Rosa†Crvx played live in their crypt. – Why not capture this unique moment for eternity? Said and done. However, the live audience was replaced by a ‘dead’ audience: they are mummies. Also special: ‘1335’ was filmed in just one take, a one-shot video:

The album cover shows an excerpt from ‘Triumph of Death’, a 15th century wall fresco in Palermo that refers to the text of Revelation 6.8:

“I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green. Its rider was named Death, and his companion was the Grave. These two were given authority over one-fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword and famine and disease and wild animals.” (Revelation 6.8)

The fast drums in ‘1335’ make direct reference to this and imitate the brisk gallop of death. The Latin words sound angry and admonishing at the same time. - And that is how they are intended.

It is the year “1335”. The plague begins to spread in Asia before spilling over into Europe. “The plague has often been used as an allegory to denounce great, devastating plagues, and this text can be read as a warning of the new, current dangers threatening our civilisation”, explains Olivier Tarabo. The video clip for “1335” shows this civilizational downfall particularly drastically by replacing the audience with corpses.
