abgeewigte linie is a work about the piano. Over the course of an
hour, we are confronted with a seemingly simple material as it
imperceptibly crawls its way up the keyboard. The piano has been
pared down to its elemental state, and we are left with the time
needed to hear the instrument with new ears. From the obfuscatory
trenches of the bottom octave to the harsh brightness of the top,
the unbearable weight of history erodes until we are allowed to
appreciate the piano for what it truly is - a resonating box of wires.

abgeewigte linie devotes itself to the aspects of linearity. The title
refers to Albrecht Dürer's Underweysung der Messung (Instruction
of Measurement, 1525), in which he describes the logarithmic spiral
as the ewige linie (eternal line). The main feature of this work is the
sequence of 545 seven-note chords, which spiral upwards through the circle of fifths from the lowest to the highest register on the piano.
These chords are divided into five groups of 109, each of which
employs the same fragmented spiral series of durations, each group
becoming faster than the last. Between the groups are "islands" which
expand the sonority heard at the opening into various linear
representations.
