On a dark January night in 2022 as the world slowly emerged from the confinement and frustration of the pandemic, saxophonist Simon Rose arrived in London from Berlin to meet guitarist Dom Bouffard at legendary improvisation space, Iklectik Art Lab.

Through the collapsing fretboards and screaming overtones, this recording is the documentation of two musicians provoking each other into in a spontaneous, cathartic, 44 minute sound clash.

Dom Bouffard is a London born guitarist, composer, and trans-disciplinary artist, who’s work focuses on experimental approaches to the electric guitar using extended techniques and prepared instruments. This ‘fractured punk’ approach draws on the instrument's unique cultural and sonic DNA, its rebel mythology and DIY / non-written heritage, expressed through improvisation, composition and hybrid processes, produced as recordings, performances, installations, audiovisual and inter-medial / interdisciplinary work and also through a parallel drawing practice connected to experiments with graphic and other experimental forms of scoring. Bouffard’s work treats sounds as physical materials with which to activate spaces, often exploring themes relating to trauma, permission and identity. Pop Matters have called him ‘a writer and musician of both combustible aggression and intense, mathematical precision.’

Simon Rose is a freelance musician and independent researcher, author from London, based in Berlin. He performs on baritone and alto saxophones in numerous collaborations and as soloist. He also collaborates beyond music with dancers, visual artists, mixed media, built instruments, site specific performance and more. His research interest is in creative processes.
