Story Behind Vaginal Erections (the “V.E.” LP), debut album from female hip-hop/rap recording artist, SHEE:

Vaginal Erections is an authentic demonstration of the current female state. You might wonder, why the title “Vaginal Erections”? Well, there is an ironic similarity between the genitals of the sexes and the expected behavior patterns associated with the gender. Men (for obvious reasons) are expected to be hard, and women are thought to be soft. As time moves on, women are accomplishing a number of feats that would not have been possible previously without male intervention. Essentially women are growing balls…well not exactly – but for any woman planning to mark her territory in a male dominated arena, you have to be prepared to show why one clit can outdo two balls.

Rap is a cultural vehicle for self expression and social reflection of the urban community; unfortunately the genre is filled with images of females that do not accurately reflect what it means to be a young Black woman. I created this album to peel away illusions and misconceptions about women rooted in gender. Vaginal Erections is about balancing soft with hard, cultivating both masculine and feminine qualities and balancing power. From a woman who confronts challenges rather than retreating passively and waiting for them to go away, from a woman that holds her own from the block to the boardroom – this album is a reflection of life and society, a celebration of womanhood – overall, it’s life as I live it and interpret it as a real woman faced with real issues.
