Abiogenesis

These selections explore the idea of what it means to be a living being - organic or synthetic. As we approach a possible singularity, where a new life form may emerge, how do we transfer a sense of ethics and responsibility, should we deem that essential? Is it the onus of a sentient creature to guide evolution, or does a civilization struggling to peacefully co-exist merely step out of the way and allow the next phase of existence to take a turn? Do we even have the capacity to make these decisions, and can we exert a significant enough influence on what comes next, or are we merely passengers observing a false sense of free will?

The tracks herein, all written on the OP1 field, are a dance between mechanistic conglomerations of abstract sound and fierce percussion, coupled with lilting melodies and ambient atmospheres steeped in organic samples. The push and pull of the synthetic and organic permeates the album - at times peaceful, at times caustic, the effort here was to represent the enigmatic nature of our times, and play with the concept of life from non-life, hence the title.

Kevin Holland creates original improvised soundscapes by orchestrating and layering the vast timbral palettes of guitar and electronics. Playing with the balance between tranquil beds of ambience and the uncharted frontiers of experimental music, he fuses elements of both to paint a live aural canvas that is exploratory, lilting, and inviting. He is sometimes joined by his wife, Jennifer Dutiel.
