Near the end of our time working for Evergreen Christian Church, Rev. Dr. Jenny Whitcher emailed me a series of Scripture passages, including 2 Timothy 1:7, Romans 15:13, John 14:16-17, 26-27, Romans 5:5, and Acts 4:31. With the Scripture, she asked kindly if I could "write a song about the Holy Spirit."
It is not much of an exaggeration to say that that request was a nightmare for me. I suppose I'm a bad Trinitarian, but I've never been good about talking about the Holy Spirit. I love the God of creation, the God of deliverance, the God of the Incarnation...but the Holy Spirit?? Her very nature seems elusive.
So I went camping. I sat at our picnic table and wrote by hand all of the Scripture passages from Jenny, trying to ingest them. And then I went on a hike.
And there, in the middle of the woods, the first line of the chorus - melody and all - came to me. "May you go in the Spirit of power." I hummed it all the way back to the campsite (the very campsite where I wrote "There is Only Home, notably), and finished the song that afternoon.
I still don't have a grasp of the Holy Spirit...but I may be willing to admit that the Holy Spirit has a grasp of me.
