Mugress by Krausen Ypsmael
In late 2022, STMWK commissioned a collaboration of S.Krausen (painting and sounds thereof) and Ypsmael (electroacoustic improvisation).
During two sessions on 24th and 25th February 2023 at Kinderinsel's basement atelier, Munich, live iterations of Mugress (200 x 96 cm, ink, oil, acrylic on canvas) and corresponding sound collage were performed, recorded and parts a1 - b2 subsequently extracted/collated in audacity.
'Here, on this pastel green cassette, the ink, acrylic and oil paint brushstrokes 'sounded' during the production of the original 200 x 96 cm 'Mugress' artwork going hand in hand with corresponding electroacoustics on the part of Ypsmael. There is a rough, moving and metallically accentuated whirring, roaring, shaking and oscillating....a quasi-turntablist suggestion....motoric humming and buzzing with mechanically cracking impressions, loops of short sound injections... in the end, the world, which we built up so cunningly and efficiently, lies in ruins... '

'Slightly brutal attacks combined with more introspective sounding and gentle scratching of surfaces result in a great mix of various approaches and techniques. It has that somewhat more improvised feeling of musique concrète approaches but lacks the refinement to make it that kind of thing. Which is something I enjoy very much. I prefer the rough ‘n tumble of this over, as things can’t always be all too refined. Very lovely...'

In the resulting audio, S.Krausen used paintbrushes, canvas and other materials.
Ypsmael used S.Krausen's brushstroke sounds, audio artefacts, electromagnetic and feedback devices, amplified objects, sipsi, slidewhistle, voice, fx pedals and field recordings (Ghiese on a2).
Track 4 is a collaboration with NM that appears on a limited edition audiovisual split release (private) named Reservoir 23, alongside audiovisual work by Josephin Boettger and Felix Kubin.
