Askance by Steve North

This work takes me further into Dark Ambient than I have previously explored.

Two methods particularly dominate this album.

Firstly, there is the use of generative synthesis. That is to say the soundscapes differ, modulate and change without any physical manipulation by the artist. This sense of movement is created by the choice of synthesiser patches (often using modular, West Coast, Buchla technology, rather than synths with a keyboard interface). So, I start a piece running and let it develop, without overdubs, or modification.

Secondly, some of the pieces on this album use time-stretching techniques to make lengthy, ambient soundscapes from 'found sound'.
