yūgen by Maximum Movement Theatre
Yugen is a Japanese aesthetic ideal. It is said to mean “a profound, sense of the beauty of the universe… and the sad beauty of human suffering”. Dim, deeply mysterious, an "awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses too deep for words.” Yugen experiences are everyday experiences which connect us to the infinite, something higher. The exact meaning of yugen is obscure. It is more feeling than thought, more abstract than tangible. Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki, in Zen and Japanese Culture wrote, "I may never be able to adequately explain yūgen when I experience it, however, I will always know when I feel it and experience it and for now, that is enough." *
Music, especially ambient music, is the perfect vessel for a yugen experience. And I would say that this piece of music by Maximum Movement Theatre well represents yugen. It is deeply mysterious, obscure in meaning, and evokes much more than it clarifies. My kind of music! Yugen is just over an hour long, and will make for a nice darkish dreamy drift. Enjoy!
