IMAGINED SHIPS
The ships they all sail on without me
the aeroplane lifts off and over the sea
I’m always the one at the window
waiting and watching for my turn to be
on the other side of the table
a hundred years old
but it feels new to me
I’d give all my time to be able
to taste the leaves at the top of the tree
The ships they all dock in the harbour
they glisten in moonlight, gloriously
I’m filled with the taste of metal
and paper and plastic, monetary
I’ll dream up a picture
green olives, and possibly
by morning I’ll leave you sleeping
so you will wake to no memory of me
I’ll sell all my clothes
and things on the street
too much choice just makes me dizzy
I’ll tell all my friends
to bury me deep
into their hearts, for two years at least
way below the concrete
and steel and sweat I sleep peacefully
holding my breath for the last piece
of history to crumble around me
I gave it my best shot
now I want to go home
to tall boy of the harbour
with bullets for eyes
he pulls me aside
for holding on
to bombs under my skin
I safely assure him
well I blew them all up
I am older I want nothing but peace
so won’t you please
won’t you please
won’t you please
forgive me
