an opal to light the dark sky with its burning
a too-familiar foolishness ripe for the learning from
so many songs to be sung

your best laid hopes will be set in their graves

even still waters remember old waves
in every farewell, shedding glances behind you
each circular search for a truth you seem blind to
releasing a scar is an act of curation
and each next refrain just a reiteration
with stacked decks and high stakes, learn the game, and play patiently
so many days to see

what’s done is done and will be done again
so strange, how the more things change
still the changes repeat, just a matter of when
as moonlight is broken by morning and day
still flowers erupt after months tucked away
as fools rush and fall without thought of a landing
still the heart is an engine, contracting, expanding
