Discontentment by Joshua Arthur Tison
To Whom It May Concern,
In May of ‘18, a childhood friend passed away. I quit my job, moved away, and within a few days, I left everything besides my guitar, my banjo, a change of clothes, sleeping bag, (cowboy) camping supplies and my jig. Went about 30 miles south to busk, and within that amount of time, I met someone on Craigslist within 100 miles west, that was heading to Oregon at the end of the week. I caught a bus to meet them face to face, agreed to ride with and help with gas, and caught another bus back home later that afternoon. Chances be, I missed my last bus and was stuck nearly 20 miles from home, and a dear friend, Andrew Donohue came to get me. Bringing me back home, he learned that I was leaving at the end of the week with a Craigslist ad gig, Oregon bound. Before we made it home, he agreed to go with me, driving me himself. For the next several weeks, I went through countless instances, and jogged my thoughts on a notepad within my phone. With each song I’d write, I’d start a new note, for jogging thoughts. This type of writing was inspired by a fellow named Dylan Tietze.
In mid to late July, outside of Missoula, MT, I found a digital pocket recorder under an over pass. This pocket recorder was used to capture moments through out the rest of my time away from home. While recording the album, I decided to record myself reading these fore mentioned “jogged thoughts” with the intent to be playing in the background of each song that followed. I also used the two original recordings that were on the recorder when I found it, as an audio sample in concordance of what song I wrote shortly after I found it.
This album was recorded with intent to capture feelings, thoughts and sounds I had created, experienced, and shared with others, moments before Andrew picked me up 20 miles outside of town until September ‘18.
