Dr. Zab strikes again, with his second release already (the fourth of his whole career) since calling it a long day with Art loyd back in 1997. On this soundtrack to a modern ballet project of the same title, it's difficult to tell how much comes from the gut, rather than is merely done to spec., but I assume Thierry had rather a sizeable amount of leeway. Due to the subject matter though it should be known that there is practically nothing resembling what you would hear from Art loyd. Neither does it fit any pattern of composition that I'm aware of, nor is it iconoclastic and out to smash all tradition under its thumb. What Thierry seems to be doing is pushing the fringe as far as it will bend before breaking, leaving the listener in a state of indecision: do I like this, or am I annoyed by it? If this is the goal then "India" is a success, for I am quite honestly stumped in a way that I can't remember being in a good long time. On 14 different selections (most of which clock in under five minutes) he uses sampled sounds of mainly sitar and tabla, synthesizer, vocalizing in French (both solo and chorus), and percussion, to deftly capture the moods of stark loneliness, claustrophobia and mania. At times the music can be almost shocking; at others pleasant and bountiful. His singing is even more lyric-oriented than on "Heartbeat," and a particular sitar motif recurs intermittently, conferring a sense of unity and structural foundation. This is not some form of crass culture, nor faux-ethnic forgery-out to blend various disciplines for their own sake-but a particularly European form of expression. I say European, not French, as the French haven't really been known for being world explorers. Thierry however is Magellan! A true master. Make up your own mind whether you like it or not; but the man is in a category of his own design.

On avait déjà constaté, sur son album précédent (Heartbeat, chroniqué dans Traverses n° 2), quelques penchants pour le patrimoine folklorique européen. Seulement voilà : à force de virer " toujours plus à l'Est ", Thierry ZABOITZEFF a débarqué sur la péninsule indienne ! Crise mystique ou quête de racines indo-européennes ? Toujours est-il que les compositions de ce nouveau CD servent de support à un spectacle chorégraphique de l'artiste autrichienne Editta BRAUN. Il va falloir vous y habituer : ZABOITZEFF et elle forment désormais une seule âme ! Thierry a tout écrit, assure tous les instruments et fait même entendre son brin de voix. Je ne sais si le spectacle est fondé sur une histoire linéaire, mais rien ne prouve que Thierry ZABOITZEFF en a de toute façon respecté la progression pour son album. Toutefois, celui-ci possède son propre fil conducteur en dépit de son aspect désordonné et foisonnant.
Pour les besoins du sujet, une quantité de samples - autorisés ! - de chants et d'instruments indiens (flûte, bansuri, sitar, tablas, harmonium, tampura...) ont été pratiqués. Mais pour mieux brouiller les pistes, Thierry ZABOITZEFF a aussi emprunté à d'autres contrées asiatiques : vièle er-hu chinoise, cymbales tibétaines, cloches, gongs, etc., surgissent ainsi par instants. (Il me semble même reconnaître un sample de la voix de la chanteuse tibétaine Yungchen LHAMO !) L'Inde que ZABOITZEFF nous fait visiter est loin d'être uniforme et se dessine plutôt au travers de virulents contrastes : méditative dans Shakti & Aphrodite, mystique dans The Bodies of the Goddesses, bigarrée et surpeuplée dans Claustrophobia in Madras, caniculaire dans Heat & Suffocation ; c'est aussi l'Inde lointaine et hostile qui engendre la déréliction du pèlerin égaré (Loneliness, Nostalgia in Bengalore) et bientôt sa colère (Rage & Domination), mais c'est également l'Inde des mutations à l'orée du nouveau millénaire, incarnée par le délirant Holi Trance Final Cut, projection de Goa, qui fait danser techno le sitar, les chants de dévotion et même les vaches sacrées !
Néanmoins les attaches aryennes n'ont pas été complètement coupées puisque quelques touches de folklore européen refont surface par endroits. Austrian Jungle Raga combine ainsi sitar, chant indien féminin, rythme machinique, tablas et chœur d'hommes tyrolien ! Enfin, l'album s'achève sur une berceuse au nom qui ne trompe pas : Schlaf Kindlein Shlaf. Cette fois-ci, il n'y a plus de doutes : Thierry ZABOITZEFF s'est littéralement affranchi des balises structurelles et stylistiques artzoydiennes, au risque de froisser les convaincus autoproclamés de la cause des musiques nouvelles européennes. Mais même avec un titre comme India, cet album ne fait pas mentir quant à sa provenance. Les frontières ne sont plus ce qu'elles étaient, c'est tout !

Der ehemalige Art-Zoyd-Musiker Thierry Zaboitzeff hat bereits mit seinem letzten Soloalbum "Heartbeat" eindrucksvoll untermauert, daß er zur neuen Avantgarde der modernen Komponisten-Generation zählt, indem er traditionell klassische Techniken mit experimentellen elektronischen Arrangements und frischen Ideen kombiniert.
Sein vielschichtiger musikalischern Background, der von Klassik über Jazz bis zur ethnischen, elektronischen und Rock-Musik reicht , schmi Izt auch auf seinem neuen Werk "India" mit der spannenden Musik zusammen, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der österreichischen Choreograph in Editta Braun
entstanden ist.
Nach ihren zwei Indienreisen schuf sie ein von indischen und europäischen Tänzern umgesetztes Werk, das Zaboitzeff auf ebenfalls interkulturelle Weise musikalisch begleitet.
Dabei treffen fernöstl iche, tei I weise authentische Folklore-Elemente ganz ungeniert auf ausgefallene elektronische Arrangements und verspielte Akustik-Akzente.
Ein höchst abwechslungsreiches Album, das mit jeder musikalischen Konvention bricht und doch in sich schlüssig klingt.

Die Trennung war nun offenbar vollzogen. Unten auf dem Cover von "India", dem vierten Soloalbum von Thierry Zaboitzeff, ist "Ex Art Zoyd" zu lesen. In stilistischer Hinsicht hat diese Trennung allerdings keine Spuren hinterlassen. Auch "India" klingt, wie schon der Vorgänger "Heartbeat" (auf dem Zaboitzeff noch mit dem Zusatz "from Art Zoyd" firmierte), nicht sehr viel anders als das, was die nordfranzösische Kammerprogformation in den 90er Jahren produziert hat. Etwas einfacher ist die Musik gestrickt, weist gelegentlich mit ein paar Dancebeats Zugeständnisse an den Zeitgeschmack auf und hat diesmal eine ausgeprägt exotische Atmosphäre.
Wie "Heartbeat" ist auch "India" Musik für ein von Editta Braun in Szene gesetztes Tanztheaterstück. Darin geht es - wie man leicht erraten wird - um Indien. In der Musik schlägt sich dies natürlich in allerlei Ethnoklängen nieder (Sitar, Tablas, indische Saitenklänge, elegische Flötentöne etc.) und in entsprechenden Gesangseinlagen und Sprachfetzen. Eingebettet sind dieselben im Zaboitzeff-typischen, getragen bis aufgewühlt dahinfliessenden, neoklassisch-elektronischen Zoydschen Raumklang, erzeugt von allerlei Tasteninstrumenten, Bass, Gitarren und Cello. Dazu kommt eine Unzahl von gesampleten Geräuschen, Stimmfetzen und Klängen, programmierte, mitunter recht heftig aus den Boxen stürmende Perkussion und allerlei bizarre, elektronische Sounds. Ab und an wird auch gesungen bzw. gesprochen, von Zaboitzeff in Französisch und von verschiedenen, im Beiheft nicht genannten, vermutlich aus Indien stammenden Damen und Herren. Allerdings stammen nicht alle aus Indien. In "Austrian Jungle Raga" (und auch später immer wieder) ist ein Männerchor zu hören, der mit Sicherheit in einer deutschsprachigen Alpenregion beheimatet ist.
Ab und zu baut Zaboitzeff Dancebeats in die Musik ein (in "Such is My Dream" z.B.), die für eine nichtklassische Tanzaufführung zwar ganz angebracht sind, dem konservativen Progger aber vielleicht etwas übel aufstoßen werden. Recht derb ist in dieser Hinsicht "Holi Trance Final Cut", welches mit allerlei Umz-Umz-Umz-Abschnitten aufwartet, aber mit seiner wirren Mischung - insbesondere dem hier immer wieder dazwischenpurzelnden Alpenchor - selbst dem Rezensenten ein Schmunzeln abgewinnt.
"India" ist eine durchaus gelungene Scheibe mit Ethno-Elektro-Kammerprog, die Liebhabern der elektronischen Phase von Art Zoyd sicher zusagen wird. Zaboitzeff erzeugt hier einige sehr dichte, fremdartige Klanglandschaften und gelegentlich auch sehr ergreifende, melancholische Momente ("Loneliness"), die den Hörer fesseln, auch wenn das Ganze nicht die Klangmacht und Komplexität seiner Stammband erreicht.
