Most will recognize Zaboitzeff from his long tenure as bassist / cellist / composer in Art Zoyd. Since the late 90s he has had a very productive solo career, with over a dozen releases to his credit during that period. This is one of three releases from 2012, a soundtrack for the film Winds of Sand, Women of Rock by Nathalie Borgers, which deals with the lives of the Tubu people of the Sahara desert (mainly Chad), the extreme conditions under which they live, and in particular the role of women in that society. The eighteen tracks here offer a variety of vignettes that provided the musical bed for the film, as well as some that were written but not used. Ranging from under one minute to over five, most fall in the middle somewhere, fusing ambient textures and defining melodies, often embellished with ethnic instruments and samples (voice clips and found sounds). Zaboitzeff composed and arranged all the material and played all the instruments himself (bass, cello, guitars, synths, voice, sampled piano, percussion, flutes and other instruments), and the result truly sets the scenes and moods imaginatively, and works well even for one who hasn’t actually seen the film. There are many highlights herein, and very little that could be considered filler; the themes are stated succinctly and never overstay their welcome. All taken, this is an outstanding set that stands strong on its own.

Sequences is a film soundtrack to Winds of Sand, Women of Rock. A documentary, it chronicles the yearly 1500-kilo march of the Tubu tribe women who trek alone through the desert to collect and sell dates in the marketplace. The music is an incredible fusion of natural sound evocations of the desert and myriad ethic folk-like themes, interspersed with percussion, electronica and e-cello symphonic interludes. As a music score, it’s masterful. I’ve only seen a video trailer of the film on YouTube, but the story about the life of tribal people in the Sahara on the face of it seems incredibly intriguing. The liner notes however characterize it as a story about male subjugation of women making it appear to be video missionary work by a female filmmaker injecting modern Western politically correct cultural ideas into an ancient tribal society. Comments on YouTube also raise questions about incorrect subtitle translations.

"Sequences" beinhaltet die Filmmusik zu einem Dokumentarfilm von Nathalie Borgers. Der „Winds of Sand, Women of Rock" genannte Streifen beschäftigt sich mit dem in der Sahara lebenden Volk der Tubu. Genauer gesagt geht es darin um die aus unserer Sicht unter extremen Bedingungen lebenden Frauen. Gemeint sind nicht nur die klimatischen Bedingungen, sondern u. A. auch die Tatsache, dass die Tubu-Frauen in ihrem Leben keinen Schritt ohne die Erlaubnis ihrer Männer tun können.

Die Aufgabe die Musik zum Leben eines Wüstenvolkes zu schreiben birgt die Gefahr, dass der Komponist und Arrangeur auf die sich bietenden Klischees zurückgreift und seinen Auftraggebern vorwiegend die auf die Europäer orientalisch wirkenden Melodien zu ethnischer Perkussion liefert. Das Thema scheint Thierry Zaboitzeff zu liegen, hat er immer wieder auf seinen Soloalben Interesse an der sog. World Music durchblicken lassen.
Natürlich musste Zaboitzeff dem verständlichen Wunsch seiner Auftraggeber nachkommen orientalisch anmutende Musik für die Filmfreunde weltweit aufzunehmen. So können die zu erwartenden, entsprechend klingenden Passagen für Perkussion, exotische Saiteninstrumente, Flöte und Geige, an einer Stelle sogar mit Windgeräuschen unterlegt, nicht fehlen. Zaboitzeff versuchte aber dem Ganzen seinen Stempel aufzudrücken, indem er an vielen Stellen einen von orientalischen Elementen durchsetzten Kammerprog generierte, bei dem die Beiträge der Tasteninstrumente (mal als Klavier, dann wieder in Form eines Streicherensembles) mit ihren oft prägnant angelegten Figuren als roter Faden dienen. Neben exotischen Saiteninstrumenten und akustischen Gitarren verwendete der Künstler auch die Klänge der Cellos und der Blasinstrumente, die abwechselnd dicht verwobene und symphonisch ausladende Strukturen vermitteln.
In "Amina" gibt es männlich-weiblichen World Music-Gesang in der französischen Sprache. An einigen Stellen von „Sequences“ werden bei mir Erinnerungen an Phillip Glass wach, dann wiederum an die verträumte Ethno-Ambient-Trompete von Jon Hassell. Wenn ich es nicht in einer solchen Filmmusik für fast ausgeschlossen halten würde, so würde ich die zurückhaltenden Damengesänge in "Women of Rock Variation" und "The Destiny of Amina" für ein Zeuhl-Stilmittel halten.

Wenn man sich nicht daran stört, dass die vorliegenden musikalischen Skizzen nur selten über zwei Minuten hinausgehen, um weniger dem CD-Hörer, als dem Film zu dienen, und wenn man sich vergegenwärtigt, dass ein Soundtrack anderen Regeln folgen muss, als eine reguläre Veröffentlichung, so kann "Sequences" auch ohne die bewegten Bilder die toleranten Freunde des Kammerprog gut unterhalten.

Ça commençait à faire un bail que le compositeur et multi-instrumentiste Thierry ZABOITZEFF n'avait pas ajouté de nouveaux deniers dans son escarcelle discographique, déjà bien plantureuse. Ses trois dernières réalisations le montrent chacune une facette différente de son champ d'action artistique.
On connaissait Thierry ZABOITZEFF comme illustrateur sonore de ballets et chorégraphies, on ne l'avait pas encore entendu comme compositeur musical de réalisations TV ou cinématographiques. C'est chose faite avec Sequences, qui n'est autre que la version album de la B.O. d'un documentaire de Nathalie BORGERS, Winds of Sand, Women of Rock (Vents de sable, femmes de roc), consacré aux femmes de l'ethnie nomade des Toubou.
Contexte oblige, la musique concoctée par ZABOITZEFF se pare évidemment de couleurs ethniques. De nombreuses pièces parmi les 18 « séquences » du disque sont nourries de samples d'instruments ethniques (percussions, flûtes, luths, vièles) et de chants traditionnels qui voisinent avec les plus coutumiers violoncelle, basse, claviers et le « robotic strings orchestra » du ZAB.
Ce n'est certes pas la première fois que des emprunts aux musiques traditionnelles et world sont réalisés par Thierry (souvenez-vous de l'album India). Mais leur intégration à la bande son d'une production documentaire a apparemment obligé le compositeur à ne faire qu'un usage parcimonieux de sa grammaire originale. On pourrait très bien écouter cette bande originale la première fois sans se douter qu' « il y a de l'ex-ART ZOYD dans tout ça ».
Mais une écoute plus attentive finit par repérer certains traits caractéristiques déjà présents dans d'autres réalisations solistes de ZABOITZEFF, voire dans les derniers albums d'ART ZOYD auxquels il a participé, mais sous une forme plus diluante. Il n'est pas certain cependant que Sequences se distingue dans la masse de productions world fusion à base de samples que des artistes comme Thierry DAVID, LIMBORG ou Steve SHEHAN ont déjà amplement concouru à développer dans les années 1990. Toute- fois, cet album affiche une volonté d'accessibilité qui n'est pas non plus déshonorante... juste un peu plus passe-partout.
