ART 129 by Kevin J. O'Conner

Thirteen new pieces sculpted out of longer improvisations. Since mid-2020, I have increasingly focused on using the spectral frequency display when editing; to that extent, these pieces are also visual works. Sometimes, as with "Plateaux" and "Mental obstacle course", the title of a piece comes from that visual component. For that reason, I have added screenshots of the spectral frequency display as the art for each track.

(For those not familiar with spectral frequency displays, the brighter and more intense the color is, the louder that part of the sound is. In this case, silence would be black and yellow would be loud (turning to white to represent REALLY LOUD, with levels in between represented by degrees of purple, magenta, red, and orange.)

Fair warning to the listener—several of the pieces in this collection house a lot volume at the low end of the frequency spectrum. This means essentially two things:

1. If you are listening on a laptop, smartphone, or Bluetooth device, some of those low frequencies may not be reproduced, and the sound may be thin or appear to lack volume.

2. If you are listening on a system with speakers better able to accommodate those lower frequencies, be cautious with the volume at first, so that you avoid damaging your speakers. The best option is to use a subwoofer, if you have one.
