Free..? by Torsten Kudjer

No, this album is no „Pop“, it also isn’t „Rock“ and moreover no album to alongside be listened to. Catchy melodies and nice little songs are rarely to be found on „Free..?“ or not even to be found at all, which surely makes this album hardly accessible to most listeners.

However, Torsten Kudjer’s intention this time was not to create something beautiful and „radio friendly“ but a piece of art with which the listener has to deal with to understand it. There are several kinds of freedom mentioned on „Free..?“: A left one stabbing his ears and eyes due to heartsickness, a drinking party animal or the preparation of a suicide attack from the perspective of the blind: The topic freedom is versatile and can be heard anywhere. Even or more than ever in the instrumental pieces of the „Refugee Suite“ the urge of freedom can be felt and finds it’s finale in an old man’s death. After „Creep“, the self-promotion of a drug lord, has faded the listener is being asked the pivotal question and has some time to think the answer over before he learns that the „End Of Innocence“ seems to have come.

The now released version of the monster „Free..?“ took a nap of about two decades in Torsten Kudjer’s head, similar to the parent album „Berlin ´89“. Two already recorded versions of this album have been discarded, but now Torsten Kudjer decided that this product is not really beautiful (just like several other works of art) but that it’s time to finally uncage this monster. May it find its freedom and make room for new stuff.
