Atlantic by Tycho Brahe
With Tasty (2001) becoming Tycho Brahe's de facto second album out of necessity rather than planning, Atlantic (2006) was the band's third album. Released through US label Cohaagen Music, the album contained new songs, plus some that predated the debut album Cassiopeia (2000) but had deliberately been held back - notably Sanctify and Seventeen, which had been part of the live set for years. The title "Atlantic" was an oblique reference to the fact that much of the band's audience for the album would be in the US and/or Europe, which are linked by the Atlantic Ocean.
Frustratingly, a typo appeared in the artwork which retitled Sanctify to "Sanctity" - an error now set in stone across all online streaming sites, but corrected for this Bandcamp release. Throwaway Fashion is a song that Ken had worked on as programmer by fellow Brisbane band Sphere - regular gigging companions of Tycho Brahe around the local live scene in the late '90s. With Sphere being defunct at that time, Tycho released their own version. The album also featured a new version of Military Option, and a new recording of Marianne, both originally released on cassette in 1996. The bonus track - Avarice (Special K Stompy Club Mix) - was the same recording as released on the 2002 Avarice single, but was remastered for this release. The album version of Avarice was a new recording, and Don't Feel That Way was slightly longer than the single version released two months earlier. The instrumental track Laconia, is a reference to the infamous Laconia Incident which took place in the Atlantic Ocean off the West African coast, during World War 2.
Atlantic set a new production standard for Tycho Brahe, having moved forward from the rudimentary systems used for Cassiopeia and Tasty, to a new, and at the time, cutting edge ProTools recording system in The Tycho Room. Being early adopters of the "home" recording revolution, DAW technology had finally begun to catch up with Tycho Brahe's DIY philosophy.
