Entering the 21st century’s second quarter, one cannot help but be acutely aware of the dizzying acceleration with which human inventiveness is transforming, often beyond recognition, the scale, pace, and depth of human experience. Technological paradigms which once shifted over long, relatively navigable periods now evolve at a disorienting pace that, according to prominent scientists and philosophers like Raymond Kurzweil, Max Tegmark, and Bernard Stiegler, has likely reached exponentiality. In today’s landscape, characterized by swift advancements in computational processes, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and biotechnology, music and art inevitably undergo a variety of unpredictable mutations as well. It is impossible to anticipate the extent to which emerging developments may enhance our lives beyond or proportionate to creating new challenges. Nor can we be certain as to whether they will unfold as swiftly as some suggest or more gradually as others claim. However, it is undoubtedly beneficial for everyone—perhaps particularly those involved in creative pursuits—to recognize the dynamism and unstable virulence of paradigmatic changes to culture and communication. Against this backdrop, Unexplained Sounds Group presents the 3.0 series. This inaugural, extended entry focuses on the aesthetic possibilities of musical expression proximal to our global climate's increasingly augmented and hybridized forms. The tracks variously represent the anxieties and hopes precipitated by the both gradual evolutions and startling thrusts forward in hybridizations of biology & cybernetics, the inscrutable wilderness of artificial intelligence, and the impact that humanity increasingly has on its habitat.
