Through The Gloom ‘Dark Patterns’ (Utopian Mechanics)

Utopian Mechanics returns with a chilling and hypnotic masterclass in dark ambient and bleak atmospherics from Stockport based artist Through The Gloom. 'Dark Patterns' sees the producer utilise disembodied chanting, primal angst and monstrous, physical low end to confront fears of nefarious technology with a palette of ancient, apocalyptic dread. Lying somewhere between the urban decay of inner Manchester and the rain soaked forests of Scandinavia, 'Dark Patterns' presents a grimoire of ceremonial exercises, conjuring ghosts from primitive landscapes through esoteric, ritualist channels.

Things begin with the isolated, barren drones of opener 'Perfect Dark', before the raw, pagan chants of 'Hostile Architecture' draw us into a viscous, hallucinogenic reality with restrained, intricately arranged percussion, violent bass tones and haunting ethereal voices. The calm, plaintive comfort of 'Whispers Within' follows to ground the listener at the close of the first half.

Over on Side B, 'Llanto' operates in a codeine tainted well of wistful dissonance, before the ferocious 'Cut Their Tongues' unleashes 10 minutes of existential ferocity, cacophonous strings and guttural screaming that barrage the senses with intensely bleak grandeur, pushing the listener through a pagan initiation of seismic potency. 'Nostromos Reckoning' settles the whole ceremony, with a widescreen uproar of beauty that rolls in to quench the freshly scorched earth.
