A new sewer system is being built locally so I decided to record the sound of the water inside while the workers were away! The weather was wet and there was a lot of mud. Water flowed heavily in the immediately accessible manholes, so I walked uphill to find slower flowing water as there is a great natural reverb within the large concrete tubing that is easier to hear when the water is not flowing so quickly.
There's also space for air down in the sewer which adds a kind of drone-like undertone that can take on a different quality depending on where you are in the sewer system.
In addition is an older sewer system recorded by dangling mics through the key holes of a manhole cover, and a designed / affected loop.
