After the release of his debut album last summer, Wordcolour returns with his most club-focussed offering yet. 'Ratios I' is the first in a series of planned EPs which focus on the playful experimental side of club music. These two tracks are full of Wordcolour's signature twists and turns.
'Volta' kicks off with a dreamy 3-feel DnB groove, before a rug-pull halfway through steps up the energy and 4-to-the-floor kick welcomes a blistering second half. By contrast, 'Overtones' is a 120bpm microtonal stepper. The track explores the frequencies of the natural overtone series, but sets them against hooky vocals, claps and thumping bass.
"I love the idea that club music can be adventurous and experimental, whilst still creating big moments on the dancefloor. I think there's such a rich seam of this here in the UK, and this is my focus for the Ratios series. The name comes from the fact that each track explores different harmonic and/or rhythmic ratios... so polyrhythms and microtonality basically! This has been a really fun jumping off point so far, let's see where it goes!" _ Wordcolour
