Took a late night drive with a head full of gas
I was hyperfocused on the recent past again
I put my key in the ignition and forgot your name
After thirty-odd years they start to sound the same to me

Heard a song on the radio with a lonesome melody
I was thinking if you ever even thought of me anymore
As I turned around the corner, the streetlight went black
I tried to hide among the darkness, but the feelings came back all at once

And I ain't upset; I'm just taciturn
Made enough mistakes to learn a thing or two by now
And I'm sick of playing this blind man's bluff
I can see the future if I wait just long enough

Saw you standing by the edge of an old country road
Had a look in your eyes said to take the next train home
I was curious and started to veer to the side
You turned your back to the hood and a part of me died right then

Sometimes I think I hear you singing at night
But my friends say I just might be confused after all these years
It's a sweet contralto or a whistling wind
I've been hearing it for so long, I don't know where it begins or ends
